A simple mesh is one that has each pixel divided along one of its diagonals into two triangular elements. Each element inherits the properties (ie, materials and groups) of the pixels in a straightforward way.

This is an easy way to create a mesh, but is numerically expensive if there are large number of pixels. The /adaptive_mesh menu has methods to create less costly meshes.
