Reasearch: Phase Field Models of Binary Alloys
Over the past several years Metallurgist Bill Boettinger
and Physicist Jim
Warren have speant a considerable amount of time studying
solidification phenomena. Of particular interest has been
phase field modeling of a binary alloy. This model
differs from more traditional approaches to solidification phenomena,
in that the liquid-solid interface is assumed to be diffuse.

The phase field method is very computationally intensive, if you are interested click here to see what will be needed to improve on this work.

Phase Field Models of Grain Boundary Formation
In the Summer of 1997, Ryo Kobayashi spent one month at the CTCMS, and
in collaboration with
Craig Carter and
Jim Warren began work on a new model of grain boundary formation
during solidification. The movies below show the progress of this
work. A paper on this topic is forthcoming.
