Synopsis
The goal of this function was to quickly resolve regions of high curvature on interfaces, where one element of one material protrudes into another. To that end, it refines only those elements which have two or more neighbors of a different material. The procedure doesn't actually work very well. Why it doesn't work is left as an exercise for the reader.
